The Web Developer extension adds lots of web developer tools to a browser for analyzing all sorts of site related technical data.

2. FireBug – FireFox  Addon

Firebug integrates with Firefox to put a wealth of development tools at your fingertips while you browse. The Firebug is another tool we use daily. You can edit, CSS, HTML , and more live in any web page…great for testing before you dig into any real code changes.

3. Search Status – FireFox  Addon

A useful quick rank-checking tool. Displays Google PageRank, Alexa rank, Compete rank and MozRank anywhere in your browser, It analyses keyword density, nofollow, backlinks, robots and again much more.

4. ySlow - FireFox  Addon

YSlow analyzes web pages and provides information on why they are slow. It is based on Yahoos rules for best-optimized web sites.

8. Google – AdSense Key Word Tool

Google’s keyword tool that gives you monthly search traffic results for specific and related keywords. Make sure you click exact match.

9. Wayback Machine (Archive.org)

Domain History. I have used this for years. Very usefully especially if you are going to build out a brand domain and want to see if there are any negative vibes or history associated with who ever owned it before you. Also a great tool if you are buying domains as part of your link building strategy.

10. Into DNS – Domain and Server Information

Gives you lots of information about a domain, IP and Nameserver, MX records. If you are running servers it’s a quick an easy tool to use for checking the status of many things. This information is really important especially for those few SEO’s that do run there own servers, (especially cloud) and really want to generate the best Search performance.

11.  SeoMozProfessional Seo Tools

* SEO Tools, Campaign monitoring, Community Support and much more. Known as a leader in SEO amongst Seo’s Marketers, Webmasters and Enterprise companies alike. There is a free and paid account. If you are going to have one reliable comprehensive set of tools and resources you can depend on, this is the one. But I am bias because I am a Pro Member.

Well that’s the list. These are a few of the ones we use at eMediaWright. There are a lot of tools on the web now. After years of trying many of the free ones we started to opt for the paid tools mostly because of reliability, accuracy and time. If you are relatively new to seo in the last couple of years, I would go straight to the paid ones. The reason is simple, these companies have had many years now of beta testing, getting feed back and refining. You will save your self time (which is money in most cases) Cheers. C

Joomla Site Verification for Webmaster Tools

by Charles Grimm on September 17, 2010

Google Webmaster Tools and Joomla

Google gives you 4 options for site ownership verification when adding a new URL to your webmaster tools account.

1.Add a DNS record to your domain’s configuration

2.Add a meta tag to your site’s home page

3.Upload an HTML file to your server

4.Link to your Google Analytics account

When doing this for a joomla site I have found it easiest to use either #2. meta tag or #3. html verification.

Meta Tag verification:

Log in to joomla administration and go to extensions > template manager.  Click the template you are currently using. Your template edit screen will come up. Click the EDIT HTML icon on the right of your screen.

A window will open allowing you to  edit the HTML code of your template.

Simply add the code just above the </head> tag.

The code will look something like this:

<meta name=”google-site-verification” content=”gzqCKvvm0NgJaAPYg_jkPz2MzMmPBmJUzk3BPPovcZQ” />

SAVE.  Then go back to Webmaster tools and click verify. Your done!

Note: You do not have to be that familiar with PHP/HTML to do this but I would always backup my file just in case.

Joomla Akeeba Backup is a simple and easy component to install and use.

The second method:

Uploading an HTML file to your server.

Note: this example is for Joomla 1.5 and for those using SEF URL’s with “add suffix to URL’s'  as YES. This is found in your Joomla Global configuration panel…under SEO Settings.

Again, inside your Joomla admin panel go to content>article manager> new.

Copy the HTML code in the title and into the body.

The code should look something like this;  google97a0e98859299a13.html

(You have to add something to the body in Joomla 1.5 or you won’t be able to save the file.) Under the section and category area click “uncategorized”

SAVE.

Then go to your menu manager and add this article page as a menu item. You can add this to your main menu if you wish because you are only going to keep this live for a few seconds until you check that the link works and appears in your address bar. Then clicking verify in webmaster tools.

That’s it! If you have any questions or comments or other suggestions please let me know. Or send me a tweet.

Web Analytics. Getting started is worth your time.

by Charles Grimm on July 15, 2009

Are you keeping up with your SEO?

I was reviewing some of our sites the other day and realized it had been some time since I had looked at our stats. Woooowww!, was my first thought when I went into Google web master tools and saw that I had a bunch of crawl errors; pages not found etc. I knew that the reason was because I had been making a bunch of changes in the site…but so many? Like the carpenter with the broken door I sometimes lapse in my own SEO maintenance duties. These are all easy fixes. If you can read you can figure this out. Most of it really comes down to doing it. Most SEO is not complicated. It just takes time, and that’s why SEO and SEM firms charge Big $$$ for this and other services like link building.

Getting back to analytics; it’s well worth your time to go into Google web tools or into some of the other many, free tools offer by SEO companies and know some of your basic analytics. The benefits are sound. You can see such things as who is visiting your site; How many people are linking to you and much more. By doing web analytics you gain insight into who are your viewers. This may ultimately lead you to
reevaluating your key word strategy. Because the bottom line is, if you are not getting the right viewers, how are you going to possibly build business through this great internet marketing vehicle, your website. Therefore if you want to build ROI , have a look at your SEO and search engine marketing stats and see if they make sense with your over all business objective… and are they working for you.

eMediaWright Blog has a lot of free tools links to help you build your SEO In House. However if you want to get fast tracked we can help you set up an SEO and SEM strategy and action plan.
